Automated Aluminum Bar Cutting for Automotive Parts Production
Automotive parts manufacturers are increasingly replacing manual bar handling with automated lines — not because labor is expensive alone, but because a saw that is fed by hand cannot hold tolerance across three shifts.
The SDY-QFS600 automatic aluminum round bar sawing line was developed for exactly this duty: 6061 and 6063 aluminum round bars around Ø120 mm, cut automatically from a bar magazine to a finished length, with 1 to 3 bars clamped and cut in a single cycle. Several automotive parts producers have recently commissioned this model for continuous production of structural and powertrain components.
The line integrates storage, bar transfer, servo feeding, hydraulic clamping, sawing, cut-off separation, chip extraction and MQL cooling into one control sequence. The operator loads the magazine, presses start, and the line runs.

1. Machine Composition
The line consists of four systems: the bar storage and loading unit, the separating-type automatic circular sawing machine, the electrical system and the hydraulic system.
1.1 Bar Storage and Loading Unit
Built from a storage rack, an automatic bar flipping mechanism and a roller group.
A. Storage Rack Fabricated as a single welded structure from high-strength material. The one-piece weldment gives the frame high overall rigidity, high strength, strong impact resistance, minimal deformation and excellent vibration damping — which translates directly into a more rigid machine and more stable, more repeatable sawing.
B. Automatic Bar Flipping Mechanism A hydraulic cylinder lifts the flipping plate, raising the bar stack; as the plate descends, the top bar rolls onto the roller group, completing the loading preparation stroke. No manual lifting, no bar-by-bar handling.
C. Gravity Roller Group Multiple rollers fixed on the storage rack carry the bar onto the roller line, where it waits for the saw's feeding mechanism to pick it up.
Net effect: operator fatigue and non-cutting auxiliary time both drop sharply, and the saw spends a larger share of every hour cutting.
1.2 Separating-Type Automatic Circular Sawing Machine
The sawing unit comprises the machine base, saw motor unit, feed mechanism, automatic bar feeding mechanism, clamping unit, automatic lubrication system, cut-off separation mechanism, cutting fluid cooling device and chip collector.
A. Machine Base A single welded structure in high-strength material, stress-relieved by tempering. Rigid, impact-resistant, low-deformation and well damped — the foundation for stable sawing accuracy over years of production.
B. Saw Motor Unit Consists of the spindle housing and the drive motor.
- The spindle is machined from high-strength material after quenching and tempering, and runs in imported high-precision bearings to hold sawing accuracy.
- The blade is clamped over a large area by a double-flange arrangement secured with a lock nut — fast and convenient blade changes with a wrench.
- The saw motor drives the spindle through a timing belt for high transmission efficiency and ample cutting power.
C. Feed Mechanism A hydraulic cylinder drives the saw motor unit forward in a power feed stroke, cutting the clamped workpiece quickly and accurately. Hydraulic feed keeps the stroke smooth, reliable and repeatable cut after cut.
D. Automatic Bar Feeding Mechanism Servo motor plus high-precision ball screw. This combination delivers smooth, fast and reliable feeding with accurate positioning, and it is what makes ±0.15 mm length tolerance achievable in automatic operation.
E. Clamping Unit One set of horizontal side clamps and one set of top clamps. Both sets clamp and release simultaneously, giving reliable holding and a stable cut. Clamping force comes from the hydraulic power unit.
F. Automatic Lubrication System Meters oil to every sliding block at set intervals, automatically maintaining the linear guides and extending machine service life.
G. Cut-Off Separation Mechanism After the blade completes the cut, the separating mechanism opens a gap on both sides of the blade and the blade retracts quickly without touching the cut faces. This eliminates retract marks and preserves surface finish.
H. Cutting Fluid Cooling Device (MQL) A minimum quantity lubrication system sprays oil through nozzles that travel with the blade, lubricating and cooling it at high cutting speed. Oil consumption is very low — approximately 30–60 cc per 8 hours. The result is lower friction heat at the chip, longer blade life and a better cut surface finish. A level switch monitors the oil reservoir and raises an alarm when oil runs low, so the operator can top up before a dry cut occurs.
I. Chip Collector Two dual-bag chip collectors work alternately, so the line does not have to stop for bag cleaning. Most of the chips are extracted at source, which keeps the working area clean and reduces housekeeping labor.
1.3 Electrical System
The electrical system includes the control cabinet, touch screen, push buttons, PLC, motors, AC contactors, relays, switches and auxiliary components. The full sawing cycle is CNC-controlled: load the bars into the magazine, press start, and the line cuts automatically. Safety interlocks protect the complete sawing sequence, so the line can run unattended between bar reloads.
1.4 Hydraulic System
A hydraulic pump drives the blade feed cylinder for a smooth feed stroke. A throttle valve lets the operator set approach and retract speed to suit the material and section.

3. Materials and Applications
Suited to: 6061, 6063 and comparable aluminum round bar, cut to length for automotive structural parts, powertrain components, bushings, shafts and general machined blanks. The same platform handles copper bar and other non-ferrous bar stock.
Typical shop profile: a plant that consumes bar in volume, needs a consistent cut length for downstream CNC turning or forging, and wants to remove manual bar loading from the process.
What it solves
- Manual bar handling and the injury risk that comes with it
- Length variation between operators and between shifts
- Blade marks and poor finish on the cut face
- Chips spreading across the shop floor
- Idle time spent waiting for the saw to be reloaded
4. FAQ
What is the maximum bar diameter the SDY-QFS600 can cut? The line is built for aluminum round bar around Ø120 mm, with 6061 and 6063 being the most common grades. Confirm your exact diameter and grade with our engineers — bar hardness and cut length affect the recommended feed rate and blade specification.
How many bars can be cut in one cycle? One to three bars, clamped together and cut in a single stroke. Cutting multiple bars per cycle is the main driver of the 10,000 pcs / 24 h reference output.
What length tolerance can I expect? ≤ ±0.15 mm on length, with cut face squareness within 0.10 mm per 100 mm. Both figures depend on bar straightness, surface condition and blade condition.
Does the line run unattended? The full sawing cycle is automatic after the bars are loaded into the magazine — flipping, feeding, clamping, cutting, separation and chip extraction. The operator reloads the magazine and monitors the line; the saw itself does not need to be attended cut by cut.
Why MQL instead of flood coolant? MQL applies a very small amount of oil directly at the blade, roughly 30–60 cc per 8 hours. There is no coolant tank to maintain, no coolant drag-out on the bars and chips, and no wet chip disposal problem. The cut surface is dry and clean.
What happens when the oil runs low? A level switch in the MQL reservoir triggers an automatic alarm, so the operator can refill before the blade runs dry.
Can the line be integrated with our existing handling equipment? The discharge side can be configured for your downstream process. Send us your layout and part flow and we will confirm the interface.
How do I get a cycle time for my part? Tell us the bar diameter, bar grade, bar length, cut length and bars per cycle. We will return an estimated cycle time and daily output for that part.
