Aluminum Bar Cutting Machine

Why Solid Aluminum Bars Need a Different Machine

Shuangdeyu Precision Machinery (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. has supplied cutting equipment to a large number of customers processing 6061, 6063 and other extruded aluminum round bars. Based on that service experience, when a customer chooses the circular saw cutting method, we normally recommend one of the three models below.

The reason is simple. An aluminum profile is hollow, but an aluminum round bar is solid. A solid bar demands far more from the machine itself: spindle rigidity, frame mass, clamping force and floor grip all matter, because any vibration shows up directly on the cut face. Machines designed mainly for profiles often lack the stability a solid bar requires — the result is a rough cut face, shortened blade life and extra secondary machining.

A circular saw solves this with a rigid spindle, a servo-driven feed and a fully enclosed cutting area. Compared with the conventional pivot-arm saw (often called a "nodding saw"), the circular saw delivers a flatter, smoother cut face, a much shorter cycle time, and a cleaner shop floor.

Model 1: SDY-Q180 — Fully Automatic Cutting Machine for Bars up to 35 mm

Best for: small-diameter aluminum round bars, up to 35 mm.

The SDY-Q180 is purpose-built for small aluminum round bars and is designed to replace the pivot-arm saw. It is faster, more precise, and keeps the working area clean and tidy.

A pivot-arm saw is inexpensive and completes one cut in about two seconds, producing one finished piece per cycle. But its cut-face quality, accuracy and efficiency are all inferior to a circular saw. Several Shuangdeyu customers had been cutting small aluminum round bars on pivot-arm saws for years; after side-by-side comparison they chose the SDY-Q180 and eventually replaced every pivot-arm saw on the shop floor. Capacity went up, and their own customers were pleased as well — the finished bar ends are visibly more accurate, the cut face is smooth, and no secondary machining is needed.

The SDY-Q180 is the smallest model in our fully automatic range, and its price is modest: it costs only slightly more than a pivot-arm saw. One customer summed it up with a Chinese proverb — "a craftsman must first sharpen his tools if he wants to do his work well" — and said the extra investment paid for itself in value that cannot be measured in the price difference alone.

Model 2: SDY-QF550-B — Hydraulic Heavy-Duty Cutting Machine for Bars up to 170 mm

Best for: medium to large aluminum round bars, up to 170 mm in diameter.

When the bar diameter grows, the SDY-QF550-B hydraulic heavy-duty aluminum cutting machine takes over. The motor power is matched to the bar diameter, so the saw maintains a stable cutting force instead of stalling or chattering in the cut.

This is where machine stability becomes decisive. Profile cutting machines are often too light for solid bar work — insufficient floor grip and frame mass translate into vibration, blade wear and inconsistent cut quality. The SDY-QF550-B is the model most frequently used by the customers we serve for bar cutting, and it can cut two or more bars per cycle, which lifts output without adding operators.

Model 3: SDY-QFS600 — Automatic Bar Feeding Saw for Unmanned Production

Best for: high-volume aluminum round bar cutting where automation and labor savings matter most.

For larger automatic production capacity, the SDY-QFS600 automatic bar feeding and sawing machine turns bar cutting into an unmanned line. One button starts the cycle; loading, sawing and unloading then run automatically, eliminating the time and labor cost of manual loading and re-loading on a standard machine.

The operator only needs to place the bundle on the automatic feeder with an overhead crane or forklift — from that point the machine works unattended.

Key features:

  • Automatic head-end alignment and removal — the machine faces the bar head automatically and removes the scrap end.
  • Automatic tail remnant collection — offcuts are collected without manual handling.
  • Higher-level safety protection — guarding and interlocks keep the cycle running smoothly and reduce downtime.
  • Spindle accuracy within 0.005 mm, with workpiece cutting accuracy held consistently within ±0.1 mm.
  • Compatible with ultra-thin saw blades, which narrows the kerf loss and saves material on every cut.

FAQ

Can one machine cut both aluminum profiles and solid round bars? A profile cutting machine can physically cut a bar, but it is usually too light for solid stock — expect vibration, poor cut-face quality and faster blade wear. For regular bar cutting, a machine with higher frame mass and clamping force, such as the SDY-QF550-B, is the better choice.

What is the difference between a circular saw and a pivot-arm saw for small aluminum bars? Both cut small bars, but the circular saw gives a flatter cut face, better dimensional accuracy and a cleaner shop floor, and it removes the need for secondary machining. A pivot-arm saw is cheaper to buy but costs more in rework and labor over time.

How accurate is the SDY-QFS600 automatic line? Spindle accuracy is within 0.005 mm and workpiece cutting accuracy is held consistently within ±0.1 mm, with ultra-thin blades supported to reduce material loss.
